July 18, 2005. I just noticed that the ezBoard message board that I had set up for this web site had been deleted. Since restoration of the deleted conference is only available to subscribers to their service, and since the activity was relatively light, I not planning on looking for another message board. If you do think a message board is worth while, or you have a message board that you like, let me know and I may promote it here. As always you can contact me here.

February 5, 2005. Sometimes people ask me what I am doing when I am not listening to CDs. The answer is that I have a small, portable Recording Studio that I use to record bands in night clubs.

October 31, 2003. The featured band for this month of November is the The Hot Rod Trio. The Hot Rod Trio has been playing all forms of rockabilly since 1991. Their second CD is about to be released, and Chrome Oxide was selected to help the band create a web presence for the band.

July 18, 2003. Recently I was shocked to find out that someone had copied one of my band pages to his site, removed my contact information, and claimed it as his own web site. While I do understand that much of the information on my web site can be handy/useful for building a web site of your own, I don't endorse copying my site and claiming it as yours (plagerism). If you plan on using information from my site, please change the layout, add your own content/commentary so that your site becomes a reflection of your creative vision rather than mine.

November 30, 2002 will be a busy weekend. If you can't get to the the 10th Annual Wembley Music and Film Fair at the world famous Wembley Conference and Exhibition Centre, in England (I have free tickets for this Fair), how about going to Cal Jam 3 at Spaceland in Los Angeles, California (which I don't have any free tickets for).

CHEAP CHICK AND AUTHORIZED DEALER TRANSFORM SPACELAND INTO CAL JAM 3

There are certain seminal events that define the beginning of a musical movement. On Saturday, November 30th a show at Spaceland promises to transform into one of those pivotal blips on the LA rock timeline.

There is a small but influential movement bubbling up under the surface of the LA music scene. An elite corps of local music luminaries are reinterpreting the bloated affectations of 70s arena rock and mixing it with post-punk sensibilities; mashing together rock history then pushing it through the strainer of powerpop and making something altogether new. What the hell can you call it? Stadium Punk? Arenacore?

On November 30th, two bands who are spreading the gospel of rock 'n' roll excess will be making their grand entrance. Is it a rock show or performance art genius? Take every stadium festival cliche and place it in the musical epicenter of LA's infamous Eastside for one night. What do you get? Cal Jam 3!

Cheap Chick are four indie rock supervixens culled from the likes of the Excessories, the Neptunas and the Magneatos. They call themselves "the world's only all-female tribute to Cheap Trick" but unlike traditional tribute bands that work to replicate the music or stage show of a band, these women play at being Cheap Trick in 1979 like method actors - calling press conferences, recruiting groupies and transforming former columnist for the New Times, Jim Freek, into Jim Addthemoney, a tribute to Cheap Trick's parsimonious manager, Ken Ademany.

Cheap Chick nail "Surrender" and "I Want You to Want Me," but also pull out some of Cheap Trick's edgier not-so-well-known material, such as "Auf Wiedersehen" and "He's a Whore," for the uber-fans and do it all up with an edginess reminiscent of early Cheap Trick demos. These are Cheap Trick songs the way Cheap Trick songs were meant to be played.

Offering an altogether heavier take on 70s rock are Authorized Dealer. Featuring renowned members of the LA powerpop and garage scenes - Jim Bacchi (Fuzzbubble, Teen Machine), Andrew Chojnacki (Peachfuzz), Brett Rothfeld (Fuzzbubble), and Jeff Utterback (Insect Surfers, Mighty Kegsmen) - Authorized Dealer have regressed to pay homage to the weightiest, most lunkheaded, testosterone-laden sounds ever to blast from the back of a Trans Am. Promising "Maximum Boogie" and covering songs by early Grand Funk Railroad, Thin Lizzy, James Gang, and Black Sabbath, these Dealers deliver all that and something more - spot-on musicianship and an over-the-top stage show that crackles and pops like a well-worn LP.

Reveling in his DJ duties for Cal Jam 3 will be none other than KXLU's Reverend Dan, host of America's only rock and roll radio show - Music for Nimrods. The good Rev. will play the Anti-Jim Ladd that night, cleansing the collective musical palate with mid-70s rock like The Stooges, The New York Dolls and The Ramones.

Like the original Cal Jam and Cal Jam 2, this take on superstar rock promises to include much more than a regular evening at a nightclub - all the things that every good rock concert should have - bootleg t-shirts sold outside, Spinal Tap-esque stage props and beer bongs in the parking lot.

Rock on, dude!

Two songs from their 1995 effort "Chair To The Head" are available at http://www.mp3.com/foreignobject for free download. November 3, 2001. The featured band for this month is Pretty Things. An English R&B band that later changed styles to psychedelic, pop, rock, .... All worth checking out.

October 1, 2001. No band of the month this month. I have been involved in a few non music related projects that have taken up a lot of my time. Stay tuned for the November band of the month.

September 4, 2001. The featured band for this month is Dead Kennedys. Punk with unique songs (words and music) as well the singers voice contributed to their unique sound.

August 3, 2001. The featured band for this month is Steppenwolf. Blues/rock/heavy metal. Singers voice and original songs contributed to their unique sound.

July 4, 2001. The featured band for this month is the Who. Maximum R & B, and beyond. One of the original British invasion bands (along with Beatles, Rolling Stones, ...) that create modern rock music. Distinctive singing, songwriting, and playing made this a band well worth following.

June 21, 2001. NBCi/Xoom announced they are discontinuing their free webhosting service as of July 15, 2001. I did have mirror sites with them. Fortunately, I have other mirror sites. In addition, when Tripod deleted my site (they did restore it a week or two later), I redesigned my web site to indicate at the tope of each page where the new main site is (chromeoxide.com) and moved the listing of mirror sites to the bottom of each page. So, all I need to do, is delete one line at the bottom of each page (currently 66 pages). So the impact to myself and my site will be minimal.

June 1, 2001. The featured band for this month is the X. High energy, hard/fast songs, ... helped this band that go beyond the standard punk format of their contemporaries.

May 1, 2001. The featured band for this month is the King Crimson. Although King Crimson had a long career as a progressive rock band, the original version of the band, only lasted less than one year.

April 23, 2001. chromeoxide.com just became the official web site of the Boardwalkers. A Southern California as a surf instrumental band that started in the early 1990s and is still going strong.

April 2, 2001. The featured band for this month is the Kinks. Starting off as a garage/hard rock band, and evolving into a pop/rock the Kinks have been around for a long time and generated a lot of quality music.

March 10, 2001. It looks like I may have been premature in moving to a new web hosting site. I just found out that whenever Tripod.com is having hardware or software problems with their servers, they put up a message for the webmaster that their site is in violation of terms, and the web site has been deleted (instead of a message about system problems and try again later). Anyway, I believed Tripod.com when they said they deleted my account, so I will be moving, and making chromeoxide.com my new home on the web.

March 10, 2001. As long as I am moving my entire site, I decided to make a few changes to the layout of the individual pages, and the web site in general, including (but not limited to) I removed the counter, and moved the listings of mirror sites to the bottom of the page, ...

March 6, 2001. Sometime between March 1 to March 5, 2001 Tripod deleted my account/web site. The last stats Tripod gave me were 9,000+ visitors per month. Since my site is so popular, I have decided to keep it going, in spite of this major setback. But rather than trying to build up another free web site, and possibly deal with this problem again, I decided go with CommandLine.net to host the new chromeoxide.com.

February 28, 2001. The featured band for this month is the Steve Miller Band. Starting off as a blues/rock/psychedelic/electronic band, they recorded a number of albums worth checking out.

February 1, 2001. The featured band for this month is Blind Faith. A very talented band that didn't stay together long enough to find out what their potential was (with former members of Cream, Traffic and Family).

January 27, 2001. The Chrome Oxide web site logo is now available on a short sleeve white t-shirt (Haynes Beefy-T - large and extra large) for $10.00 (for the shirt, and $3.00 for shipping and handling) (make checks payable to Steven Libis).

January 26, 2001. Danny, of the Captain Dan and his Earthbabies wants me to start taping his band on a regular basis.

January 23, 2001. I just received a copy of a new book on Cream published Balafon Books and written by Chris Welch. Details of the book are on my Reference Material page, under Cream.

January 17, 2001. The A&E channel is in the process of finishing up production on a Biography of Ted Nugent that they are planning on broadcasting on February 22, 2001 (sweeps weeks). Some of my vinyl albums of the Amboy Dukes will be used in this production, and I will be receiving screen credit.

January 12, 2001. Jim, the guitarist for Tony Milazzo Invision and Samuel James Band wants me to start taping both bands on a regular basis. The Samuel James Band is in the process of digitizing and posting some of my recordings to their web site.

January 5, 2001. The featured band for this month is Tonio K.. A band that I don't have many details on. The lyrics of their songs were very different from most of what was getting airplay, and I liked the sound of the singer and the band (alternative rock).

I also assisted Jay Hector with recording the Mermen on:

for the Mermen audio archives.

October 2, 2000. Try looking for the words:
Chrome Oxide Music
at the Google search engine. You will see about 1,400 hits. I spent an hour or two browsing through the links. After ignoring the links to Chrome Oxide that refer to the chemicals, the color or the composition of blank audio tape, that still left about 75% (1,000 links) of the links that were references to this music site. But even better than that, I found a few sites that quoted from my site, and used my site as a reference for theirs!

I think that helps explain why this site received 6,300 visitors for the month of September 2000.

October 1, 2000. The featured band for this month is Translator. Translator, was a band that formed in Los Angeles in the summer of 1979. Their sound was a blend of folk-rock, modern sound, pop, ... They had a distinctive singer and band sound, and wrote interesting songs.

September 15, 2000. We just became the official web site of the The Rick Lawndale Band. Lawndale started out in the mid 1980s, in Southern California as a surf instrumental band. After some personnel changes, the band ended.

The band is back (with different personnel), with a different name (The Rick Lawndale Band) and a different sound (surfabilly and psychedelic).

September 5, 2000. The featured artist for this month is the Jim Carroll Band. Inspired by the punk/new wave scene, Jim Carroll joined a band, recorded 3 albums, then quit the music business. Interesting lyrics, singing voice/style and strong instrumental backing make this a band worth checking out.

July 29, 2000. The featured artist for this month is The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Starting in England in the mid 1960s, they were a rock/blues/psychedelic/fusion/... band with an amazing guitar player/songwriter/singer whos' influence is still felt today.

July 10, 2000. I just finished acting as roadie/assistant sound engineer for Jay Hector (D.J. - The Third Wave, surf music audio archivist, ...) who was recording (16 track) Dick Dale at three live shows:
June 1, 2000 Ventura Theater, Ventura, CA,

June 5, 2000. The featured artist for this month is Canned Heat. Starting in California in the mid 1960s, they developed an updated blues/rock sound that could be wild as well as mellow.

May 2, 2000. The featured artist for May 2000 is Television. Starting in New York in the early 1970s, they developed a distinctive rock sound based on the singer, and dual guitar format.

April 21, 2000. You asked for it (you did, really, you did), you got it. You may have thought that since I don't have much person commentary on my site (other than the choice of bands) that maybe I didn't have any opinions. Well, you were wrong (I hope), and here is proof.

I have been asked to write a column for VinylSale.com. This is a web site that specializes in buying/selling/trading vinyl. Evidently they are just getting started with original content, and for some reason they picked me. Anyway, until I start getting some feedback, I will just ramble on about whatever I feel like.

They no long have my column on their site, but you can still read it here at Chrome hEARing.

February 29, 2000. The featured artist for March 2000 is Them w/Van Morrison, an r & b band, from the mid 1960s, from Ireland. Van Morrison's singing and song writing made this a band worth listening to.

As always, we are looking for more sites that will link to us here.

January 2, 2000. I just noticed that the Answering Machine that Tripod used to offer is no longer available. If you left me a message on the Answering Machine, and I haven't responded to you, please E-Mail me instead.

October 31, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Blues Project. Blues Project was American pop/rock/blues/jazz/folk/... band from mid 1965 to mid 1967.

Back in June 1997 when I started this site, the index at the bottom of the page seemed like a good idea. Due to the amazing growth of this site, I now think that the Site Map is a better way to do it.

I will continue to list the featured band of the month at the bottom of each page on this site.

December 3, 2002 CD Now is undergoing changes, and asked that ALL links be removed.
October 28, 1999 I signed up with CD Now.

October 22, 1999. The Chrome Oxide Music Collector Pages web site hit the big time! And I didn't even know it.

Tripod stats showed that this web site had more than 4,000 unique visitors last month (September 1999). Because of that, Tripod has increased my web space from 11mb to 50mb.

October 7, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Nazz. Nazz was an American pop/rock band from mid 1967 to mid 1969.

September 5, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Rory Gallagher. Rory Gallagher led his own band from the early 1970s until his death in 1995, performing his own style of rock/blues.

August 4, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Groundhogs. This was a blues band from England in the early 1960s (and beyond) that didn't became famous until they moved to a much harder rock sound in the late 1970s.

July 22, 1999. I just added a Reviews Page, (as well as my first online review for this site). This will be a page where I can do short pieces if/when the mood strikes me.

July 1, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Ten Years After. This was a blues based rock band from England in the mid 1960s (and beyond) that became famous for the fast/furious guitar skills of Alvin Lee (the leader).

June 1, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Savoy Brown w/Chris Youlden. This was a blues based rock band from England in the mid 1960s (and beyond).

May 21, 1999. On the advice of legal counsel, we have now added a copyright notice, and legal disclaimer to the bottom of each page on this web site.

May 1, 1999. I just added another featured artist, James Gang w/Joe Walsh. This was a guitar oriented rock band from mid-west America in the late 1960s (and beyond).

March 31, 1999. I started a new section on this page, Classifieds. Now, if someone is interesed in putting an ad here, or I find something I think is worthwhile, there is a place for it.

March 26, 1999. I just added another featured artist, Colosseum. This was a jazz/rock rock band from England in the late 1960s (and beyond).

If you see the date changing on this page, without an announcement in this section, it is probably something like fixing minor coding problems, spelling errors, minor layout changes, new page on this site (so I changed bottom index), ... Any major changes to this page, will be announced here.

December 29, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Cream. This was a band from England in the mid to late 1960s that had a lot of influences including rock, jazz, blues, psychedelic, ... The original power trio.

November 24, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Spirit. This was a band from California in the mid to late 1960s that had a lot of influences including folk, rock, jazz, blues, psychedelic, ...

September 28, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Country Joe and the Fish. This was a band from San Francisco in the mid to late 1960s that started off as folk/protest and very quickly became very good rock/psychedelic band. I have all the standard releases listed, and a few of the nonstandard ones listed as well.

September 26, 1998. I added another photo of myself. This time with my pouch prominently displayed.

September 23, 1998. A new tape and information on four live shows from 1965 and 1966 on Paul Butterfield Blues Band has just been added to this site.

September 22, 1998. New information on hundreds of live shows for the Yardbirds just came in. I am in the process of integrating the information into this site.

September 14, 1998. A new tape and information on Jeff Beck Group w/Rod Stewart just came in, so that page has been updated.

September 12, 1998. I just realized that I was getting a bit behind with my Esoteric music list. I just added about 170 performances that were not previously listed here.

September 10, 1998. I combined the Mirror Sites and the counter section into one place.

September 9, 1998. I moved almost all the graphic images off the front page and into the Gallery. Again, just looking for ways to speed up loading of the first page.

September 3, 1998. I found even more awards that would be suitable for this site. :-)

August 29, 1998. Added another Mirror Site, FreeServers. I also removed a few sites that I had been trying out. (I have decided that sites without FTP, or sites that require file activation are more hassle than they are worth.) Let me know if you know of any others I should be using.

August 27, 1998. I just started to change the information (and the way it is presented) in the Print, Audio and Video section of each of the bands convered on this site. Hopefully it will be a more concise overview.

August 24, 1998. I just added photos of Chrome Oxide to the Intro section. Now you can figure out if you have really met me in a past/present/future life. :-)

August 20, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Buffalo Springfield. This was a folk/rock band from Los Angeles, CA in the mid 1960s that contained many members who went on to bigger fame and fortune in their later bands. And of course I had a few things in my collection that make this page a bit more interesting.

August 18, 1998. Changes older than a few months will be moved to a (Changes) page. Just trying to reduce the size of the main page (index) so that it loads faster.

August 17, 1998. I just spoke with Dave, and this is now the OFFICIAL INSECT SURFERS WEB SITE. In recognition of this awesome achievement, I have given myself a couple of additional awards.

August 9, 1998. I just added a counter to each page on this site for GeoCities.

August 6, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Blodwyn Pig. This was a band from England in the late 1960s that blended rock/blues/jazz around a very good guitarist. I never did get to see them, but did manage to pick up all the commercial releases, and a few of the rarities.

August 6, 1998. I submitted this web site to a bunch of search engines and web spyders. This site should start showing up in a lot of other places in the next few weeks.

July 31, 1998. I started setting up Mirror Sites for this site. I intend to keep Tripod as my main site, with the most updated information. But I am testing out other sites as backup for this one, and possibly for development of other, less music related information.

If you do check out any of the Mirror Sites, please contact me to let me know which sites you like most, and which you like least.

July 29, 1998. I finished working on the Reference Material page. This is now the listing of items in my collection that I like and use on a semi-regular basis. This includes print and computerized sources. As usual, I am interested in finding out about items that I don't have that are worth acquiring.

July 23, 1998. I received notice that Tripod is starting a new online community: the Classic Rock Pod. They have chosen me as a Founding Pod Publisher because of my great Music Collector's Pages!

July 23, 1998. I just started redoing the brief intro to the bands featured on this site. The brief intros previously written assumed you were already familiar with the bands to start with. While I suspect that will be the case with most people browsing this site, for the benefit of those unfamiliar with these bands, I have tried to be a little more descriptive.

July 23, 1998. I just added two new featured artists, Moby Grape a 1960s band from San Francisco that was overly hyped at its debut, and never recovered from it. However, they did make good music together. And I do have a bit more information than the casual listener would be aware of.

I also added Quicksilver Messenger Service, yet another 1960s band from San Francisco. This band was afraid that they would be destroyed if they went commercial. They did evolve to where I didn't care as much, but the early years were very powerful rock.

July 21, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Plimsouls. This is another local Los Angeles pop/rock band that I enjoyed listening to on the radio, and seeing live in the clubs. While they didn't record much in the studio (only 2 LPs, 1 EP, and a few 45s), I enjoyed them a lot. And after all, that is what listening to music is all about.

July 14, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Dream Syndicate. This time it is another local Los Angeles area band. I liked them a lot, and managed to see them a few times over the years.

July 13, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Insect Surfers. I have know the leader of the band for a number of years, and have been to more than a few shows, so I figured I had enough information to make a fairly impressive listing of their live shows.

July 13, 1998. I am working over the various pages, so that they all start with the What's New at the top of the page, and the related Other Links is at the bottom of the page (on all pages).

July 6, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I like the band, and I think I some information that the average collector isn't familiar with.

July 1, 1998 Well, not actually on this site, but Making Time British Beat Groups of the 1960s, CD review of the month (July 1998), was written by me, on John Mayall Bluesbreakers Looking Back CD, and has a link back to my pages from it. Thanks.

June 28, 1998. I have just added a page to list some of the Record Swap Meets in the local (Southern California area) that I try to attend. These are a great way to pick up older/discontinued releases, or see the newest local and import releases.

June 25, 1998. I just added another featured artist, Big Brother and the Holding Company w/Janis Joplin. I like the band, and I realized that I had access to a fair amount of information, as well as listings for a few live shows.

June 22, 1998. At the request of a friend, I am posting another persons plea for the commercial release of the benefit concert Little Feat performed at after the death of Lowell George.

June 4, 1998. Moved the page counter to Mirror/counters section of this page.

And moved Bottom 95% logo to another page.

March 30, 1998. I am working on a new section / page to list the Reference Material I use when looking into a performer. This will include print media and computerized media that doesn't require the use of the internet (just a stand alone PC).

March 28, 1998. Started using [ ] to help make links more identifiable when multiple links are on the same link. Also managed to get links to my site in a few more interesting sites.

March 22, 1998. Tripod is offering (and I am finally putting them on this site) a Guest Book (since removed when I left Tripod) for visitors to this site.

March 14, 1998. I went through and added meta tags to all the pages on this site. No other major changes. All the usual minor changes including, fixing broken links, adding new links, removing old/dead links.

1997. Jeff Beck Group w/Rod Stewart, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Taste are some pages I added this year.

September 13, 1997. I added a few more navigation links to the Yardbirds page. Including complete Albums, and complete live shows.

August 11, 1997. I created the Wall Of Voodoo page. And added links to it to all other pages on this site. Otherwise, only minor corrections to format and layout. Content not changed or corrected.

New links have been added to the Music Links page. But until I can figure out an easy way to highlight the new additions, they will just be added to the page as I find them, and not singled out.

December 10, 2002.
Back in October 1999 I put up links to CD-Now so that visitors could easily link to the related band pages and instantly see which items were still in print/available for purchase. CD-Now no longer has that option. For the moment I am putting in Amazon.com search boxes. Amazon.com doesn't easily allow for links to individual band pages in the same way that CD-Now used to. So, instead of me being able to create direct links, I have put up the Amazon.com search box instead. So you can still go to a page with the various bands products, buy you now need to go through a search box.

As always, let me know what you think.
