BOARDWALKERS
WHAT's NEW
[Top (page index)] [Up] [Down] [Bottom (site index)]

What's new on this web page?

If you see the date changing on this page, without an announcement in this section, it is probably something like fixing minor coding problems, spelling errors, minor layout changes, new page on this site (so I changed bottom index), ... Any major changes to this page, will be announced here.

July 18, 2005. I just noticed that the ezBoard message board that I had set up for this web site had been deleted. Since restoration of the deleted conference is only available to subscribers to their service, and since the activity was relatively light, I not planning on looking for another message board. If you do think a message board is worth while, or you have a message board that you like, let me know and I may promote it here. As always you can contact me here.

January 2003 Welcome our new bassist, Mark Hoeschler. His first show with us will be January 31, 2003 at the Westchester Sports Bar.

November 8, 2002 Thank you for the tremendous response to the bass player wanted ad. It looks like the position will be filled from one of the people who saw the ad on this web site, or via the ListServ. Because so many people responded, it looks like The Boardwalkers will also have a backup bass player as well.

September 15, 2002.
WANTED:
Bass player with experience.
Into 1970s rock and instrumental surf music.

August 10, 2002. Dave Sherman filled in on bass at the Acid Beach Party 4, and will be playing with the Boardwalkers at the upcoming Pitcher House show.

July 28, 2002. There has been a parting of the ways, and Rick Linstrom, the bass player, is no longer with the Boardwalkers. The band is continuing on. The show at the Baja Cantina has been cancelled, but The Boardwalkers will be playing at the Acid Beach Party.

July 3, 2002. The Boardwalkers played two amazing sets at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood. Musicians in attendance included band members from: Chum, Volcanics, Rancheras, Hillbilly Soul Surfers, Fabulous Planktones, ... Maybe you should see the Boardwalkers and find out what all these other musicians already know.

June 7, 2002. The revised WebRing code should be functional on the new server (Yahoo! had dropped the Web Rings).

February 18, 2002. The Boardwalkers show from January 26, 2002 at the Westchester Sports Grill has now been posted to The Linux Public Broadcasting Network for your viewing and listening pleasure.

February 5, 2002. Into The Void, KDNK in Colorado has decided to use the Boardwalkers version of Into The Void from their performance at Mr. T's Bowl, February 16, 2001.

as their theme song.

October 14, 2001. Yahoo! is discontinuing ownership of WebRings. I now need to go back and re-apply for the WebRings all over again. Some of which were already in the process of moving to other servers.

September 25, 2001. I applied to join three different WebRings related to surf/instrumental music. The rings are listed here at Other Boardwalkers/WebRing links.

April 23, 2001. I started creating this page. :-)

BOARDWALKERS
INTRO:
[Top (page index)] [Up] [Down] [Bottom (site index)]

Normally I (Chrome Oxide) say a few words about the band in this section. However, since Dan Valentie knows more about the band than I do, I am including his write up of the history and current status of the Boardwalkers.

The Boardwalkers were started in 1989 by ex-members of Paisley Punk groups The Unclaimed and Thee Fourgiven. Bassist Ray Flores and I had developed the idea of a surf instrumental power trio; with Scot Forer. We were originally called Green Room. We played two shows under that name, the first was Christmas Eve 1989 at the gritty Toby Jug and in early 1990 at Helen's Anti-Club, then a fading punk venue.

Ray left to pursue business interests, but some of his ideas for tunes, in particular These Boots Are Made For Walkin', remain with the group. His replacement was an old band-mate of mine from Ohio, Forrest Bivens. He had a more traditional approach to bass playing, making it possible for the group to build a 40 song setlist, which included many rare tunes (The Truant, Steel Pier, High Wall, Our Favorite Martian, Bikini Drag, Moment Of Truth, Mar Gaya, Shockwave, Surfari) plus originals which I wrote.

The first single was recorded studio-live in October 1991, released in mid 1992. Shortly thereafter, Scot left the group. Jeff Utterback took over on drums. Jeff was experienced and enthusiastic, and has remained the driving force in the band for 10 years. Forrest moved back to Ohio late 1992, and Rick Linstrom joined on bass for a couple of years.

From 1995 to 1997 Pete Curry (Halibut's guitarist) played bass and recorded 2 songs on drums, Banzai Pipeline and It's A Bikini World.

In 1999 Rick returned to play bass until mid 2002. Along the way I had played bass with the Hillbilly Soul Surfers, so when I needed a bassist on short notice, Dave Sherman came to the rescue, filling in on the remaining 2002 gigs. As of January 2003, part time Insect Surfer Mark Hoeschler is joining the band on bass.

SPECIAL THANKS TO: Linda Curtis, Jamie Murray/Mach Turtle Productions, Domenic Priore, Dave Arnson, Lee Joseph/Dionysus, Pete Curry, Dave Sherman, The Rancheras, Captain Dan, Jay Hector, Phil Dirt, Steve Libis and to everybody that digs The Boardwalkers

The Boardwalkers Mr. T's Bowl February 16, 2001 ****

It's been way too long since I heard anything new from the Boardwalkers. Monster themes are now center stage, and the way they've attacked it is nothing short of brilliant. Great songs, big sound, powerful artful arrangements, and plenty of fun. This CD-R was recorded live at Mr. T's Bowl on February 16, 2001 by Jay Hector. It's not available for sale, just a glimpse into the band's new direction. So, the question is, when's a real CD gonna come out?

Picks: Wavemasters, Spiderwebs, Goblin Stomp, Vasquez Rocks, ToHo07 A Go-Go, Dancin' Madly Backwards / Totem Pole, Dr. Nauga and Mr. Hyde, Icicles, Swampy, March of the Monsters, Magical Mystery Tour, Into The Void / Iron Man

Label: JayDisc JD 0004 CD-R Live

------------------------------------------------------------------------
WAVEMASTERS ****

"Wavemasters" rolls and tilts with full bodied throb and twang over an infectious bass line. Great surf with an unusual rhythm and rockin' smooth power. mean without brute force. Excellent!

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPIDERWEBS ****

Rumbling bass and vibrato weirdness as chords climb and fall, before giving way to a gently assaultive theme. Much more about celebrating the guitar than a melody, "Spiderwebs" is tribal and haunting.

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
GOBLIN STOMP ****

With a bit of a TV monster feel, "Goblin Stomp" is a finely crafted piece, well written and well thought out. The stinging whammy and the funky backtrack are very cool. there's no doubt they had grins on during this performance.

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
VASQUEZ ROCKS *****

Tribal drums and Spanish themes portray a dramatic Latin scene with a sense of the Casbah as well. Rock solid! Aside from the bass player knocking the mic out of the way, this is a splendid track.

Latin Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Kill For It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOHO07 A GO-GO ****

Spies and surfers, dangerous breaks, and rumbling outsiders threatening. The splashy heavily effected bridges are very cool. the main riff is pretty strong too. A tuff song for a stormy day.

Spy Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DANCIN' MADLY BACKWARDS / TOTEM POLE ****

Dissonant and clumsy, "Dancin' Madly Backwards" awkwardly introduces the vibratoed and splendid "Totem Pole," as if the band was backing up just to get to "Totem Pole," an Indian motif number with wah wah breaks and a fine lead riff.

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DR. NAUGA AND MR. HYDE ****

A touch of a Bomboras structures here, though the performance is much stronger. Grand whammy and ringing notes over tribal drums and bass thunder. Simply fine, and a brilliant title for sure.

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPY VS SPY YPS SV YPS ***

Yes, that's right, "Spy vs Spy ypS sv ypS" reads the same in both directions. It also contains lots of chunk and espionage thrills. Much more about rhythm and riffs than melody, it nonetheless commands attention in a jazzy artful way.

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Great To Have
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ICICLES ****

Soft and squishy, slow and silky, "Icicles" floats on a layer of crystalline water across a delicate seascape... that is until it launches into an inspired romp on a watery swell. While not really melodic, this thundering infectious number powers and jives with liquid ease.

Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SWAMPY *****

"Swampy" is a glorious tango de surf, a mambo del mar. Suave and smooth, surf and groove, warm and sunny, and tropical in a Latin way. The melody is splendid. You must hear this.

Mambo Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Kill For It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MARCH OF THE MONSTERS *****

Ultra reverb surf monsters crash and writhe right in front of you. Demented and just way too cool! The controlled disaster that is the guitar in this track is devilishly twisted. Like the Reventlos on a 9'6" after eating a bad banana. A psychedelic surf nightmare.

Monster Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Kill For It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR ****

Yes, boys and girls, the Boardwalkers take on the Beatles' theatrical " Magical Mystery Tour." Surfy and poppy, frothy and gutsy.

Beatle Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Miserable Without It
------------------------------------------------------------------------
INTO THE VOID / IRON MAN *****

Metal is such a rich mine for surf covers... yet it remains largely overlooked. The lads fear no evil as they plunder the sludge of "Iron Man." Way powerful, and really fast. Monstrous!

Metal Surf Instrumental
Performance: Notable
Production: Average Stereo
Gotta Have It Factor: Kill For It

The Boardwalkers Jack's Sugar Shack Oct 24, 1997 ***

This CD-R was recorded live at Jack's Sugar Shack on October 24, 1997 by Jay Hector . They're gone now, but these guys REALLY needed to do a well recorded album.

Picks: Hip Code, Surf Probe, Moon Race, Monster A-Go-Go, Spy vs. Spy, El Mirage, Tortuga, ItOs A Bikini World, Ali Baba, Our Favorite Martian, Boardwalker

------------------------------------------------------------------------
WIND UP ***

"Wind Up" is a fifties sorta riff rocker, with a simple progression.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
HIP CODE ***

Rhythmic, bass chunked, and playfully written. This seems to use influences from " Music To Watch The Girls By ," as well as new melody elements. This take is vibrato throbbing and ominous.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SURF PROBE ***

Surf riffology and great drums, with lots of reverb kicking out the melody line and whammy chords. Power and splash.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOON RACE ***

The Boardwalkers cover the Citations great obscuro. It's great to hear someone do this song with flair and style. Excellent performance!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MONSTER A-GO-GO" ***

"Monster A-Go-Go" is a rich surf rocker with an ominous riff and plenty of lead guitar tone and style variation verse to verse. An excellent track!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPY VS. SPY ***

There's a timer ticking away in this slow number, and a menacing few notes played over the spy flick backtrack. In the beak, there's some fine whammy vibrato. For such a no melody tune, it's quite interesting and fun. A little gimmicky and splashy.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
EL MIRAGE ***

Big splashy whammy chords separate riffs of surf guitar. Ultra simple, yet pretty effective.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
TORTUGA ****

This is an intriguing track. The tropical Mexican melody dribbled out with fine double picked guitar over tribal drums is spectacular. The long fuzz notes in the break give it a middle eastern air of mystery and danger. This should really be covered! Infectious and enticing.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE DAY THE SURF STOOD STILL ***

Fast and pumped up, with excellent drums, " The Day The Surf Stood Still " rages across small fast moving break ridden by shortboarders intent on life at the edge. A fine surf tune.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SKULL RANCH ****

Vibrato shimmer and an interesting beat together. The riff is mysterious, and the structure effective. the break is different from the rest of the track, with a cowboy beat and distortion on the guitar. very interesting.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
IT'S A BIKINI WORLD ***

A simple progression and an infectious performance make for a pretty cool track. The damped lead lines are most pleasing. Lots of drum action and long flowing chords.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALI BABA ***

Dave and the Customs ' magnificent " Ali Baba " sounds great coming from the axes of the Boardwalkers . Lots of fire and style despite some errors.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIKINI DRAG ***

This is way to chumpy for my taste, though it's well done and perhaps modeled after the Pyramids.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
OUR FAVORITE MARTIAN ****

Bobby Fuller and the Fanatics ' infectious " Our Favorite Martian " is very well done. It's hard not to like the melody, and the band does a real nice job with it. Crunchy reverb kicks and plenty of flair.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOARDWALKER ***

"Boardwalker" is a faster paced tune with some finely double picked lines, as well as some whammy chords, and vibrato drama. This is a fine performance.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Into The Void, KDNK in Colorado has decided to use the Boardwalkers version of Into The Void from their performance at Mr. T's Bowl, February 16, 2001 as their theme song.

This is an experiment. I am listing various classified ads that might be of interest to browsers of this page.

Let me know what you think of this idea?

And if you do order something listed here, let them know you found out about it here.

Also, let me know how this worked out for you.

MusicStack looks like a good source of used music items (LPs, CDs, posters, ...).
As always, let me know what you think.

4 Million Hard to Find CDs & LPs at MusicStack
December 10, 2002.
Back in October 1999 I put up links to CD-Now so that visitors could easily link to the related band pages and instantly see which items were still in print/available for purchase. CD-Now no longer has that option. For the moment I am putting in Amazon.com search boxes. Amazon.com doesn't easily allow for links to individual band pages in the same way that CD-Now used to. So, instead of me being able to create direct links, I have put up the Amazon.com search box instead. So you can still go to a page with the various bands products, buy you now need to go through a search box.

As always, let me know what you think.
