What's new on this web page?

If you see the date changing on this page, without an announcement in this section, it is probably something like fixing minor coding problems, spelling errors, minor layout changes, new page on this site (so I changed bottom index), ... Any major changes to this page, will be announced here.

July 18, 2005. I just noticed that the ezBoard message board that I had set up for this web site had been deleted. Since restoration of the deleted conference is only available to subscribers to their service, and since the activity was relatively light, I not planning on looking for another message board. If you do think a message board is worth while, or you have a message board that you like, let me know and I may promote it here. As always you can contact me here.

June 10, 2005. Jim Sciurba is moving to New Orleans. June 10, 2005 was his last show with the band.

October 2003. The T.V. show, Las Vegas, episode 102 (broadcast October 2003), used Nomad and Silver Coast in a couple of wave pool scenes.

June 26, 2003. The L.A.Weekly Music Awards for 2003 included Best Instrumental Band Insect Surfers.

May 1, 2003 The Insect Surfers web site has changed! Reverend Dan at Music for Nimrods has created a new look for the Insect Surfers web site.

February 6, 2003. The Insect Surfers new CD, Mojave Reef is now available for purchase from this web site, from the band, and from where ever surf music can be purchased.

December 24, 2002. I just found out that for the second year in a row, and three (or maybe four) times total, the Insect Surfers made the Music Connection magazine Hot 100 Unsigned Artist List.

June 7, 2002. The revised WebRing code should be functional on the new server (Yahoo! had dropped the Web Rings).

December 1, 2001. Thanks to The Linux Public Broadcasting Network, recent shows by the Mermen and Insect Surfer shows have been videotaped, and have been digitized for online viewing at Surf Music.

August 2, 2001. The Insect Surfers play the Staples Center! The National Women's Basketball Team (Sparks) will be playing at the Staples Center on Thursday, August 2, 2001 at 7pm. It's beach night at the Staples Center, and the Insect Surfers will play during the half time and the time outs.

August 28, 2001. For those of you who can't attend, two venues the Insect Surfers play are at are now broadcasting the shows on the internet:
Mr. T's Bowl are webcast from: LiveClubs.net
Spaceland.

July 27, 2001. REVEREND DAN, of Music For Nimrods just awarded the Insect Surfers the Music For Nimrods BAND OF DISTINCTION Award!. Read all about it here in the Reviews - Other section, or on the REVEREND DAN's web site.

March 30, 2001. Change of e-mail address for Dave. Dave is in a period of transition, and for the moment, the best way to contact him via e-mail, is the old e-mail address David Arnson / Insect Surfers, at LAFN.ORG.

April 23, 2001. I have added a new page to this web site. Calendar will list upcoming shows for all bands that have official web sites at chromeoxide.com. This new page is fairly small, and should load much quicker than any of the individual band pages. I will continue to list all shows on this page.

March 30, 2001. Change of e-mail address for Dave. The new e-mail address for David Arnson / Insect Surfers, is the original old one at LAFN.ORG.

March 11, 2001. Today, I applied to join the Surf Music WebRing. Jump to Other Insect Surfers Links, to check out the other sites who are part of this WebRing.

March 10, 2001. It looks like I may have been premature in moving to a new web hosting site. I just found out that whenever Tripod.com is having hardware or software problems with their servers, they put up a message for the webmaster that their site is in violation of terms, and the web site has been deleted (instead of a message about system problems and try again later). Anyway, I believed Tripod.com when they said they deleted my account, so I will be moving, and making chromeoxide.com my new home on the web.

March 10, 2001. As long as I am moving my entire site, I decided to make a few changes to the layout of the individual pages, and the web site in general, including (but not limited to) I removed the counter, and moved the listings of mirror sites to the bottom of the page, ...

March 6, 2001. Sometime between March 1 to March 5, 2001 Tripod deleted my account/web site. The last stats Tripod gave me were 9,000+ visitors per month. Since my site is so popular, I have decided to keep it going, in spite of this major setback. But rather than trying to build up another free web site, and possibly deal with this problem again, I decided go with CommandLine.net to host the new chromeoxide.com.

January 30, 2001. I just found out that on Spinner (internet radio), on the surf music channel, the Insect Surfers have one song on the top 25 most requested surf songs.

January 26, 2001. For anyone that wants to contact David Arnson / Insect Surfers, there is a new e-mail address.

January 1, 2001. I made some minor modifications to the layout and some of the sections on this page.

October 31, 2000. The new Chrome Oxide Music Collectors Pages Message Board is provided by EZBoard.

July 31, 2000. For those of you who can't attend, the Saturday August 5, 2000 Acid Beach Party Two at Mr. T's Bowl will be webcast at: LiveClubs.net. Check out the Acid Beach Party Two poster.

Many shows at Mr. T's Bowl, Al's Bar and other Los Angeles area clubs are now being webcast here as well. Look for individual show listings to see if I am aware of webccast capabilities.

July 13, 2000. Today, I applied to join the Instrumental Rock Music WebRing. Jump to Other Insect Surfers Links, to check out the other sites who are part of this WebRing.

July 2, 2000. The Insect Surfers play the Los Angeles Forum! The National Women's Basketball Team (Sparks) will be playing at the Los Angeles Forum on Sunday, July 2, 2000 at 5pm. It's beach night at the Forum, and the Insect Surfers will play during the half time and the time outs.

May 7, 2000. The Insect Surfers will be playing live in your home! From noon until 2pm on May 7, 2000, the Insect Surfers will be playing live at dublab.com. And all you need to do to participate, is make sure you have Real Player installed, enter the dublab.com site, click on the live stream icon on the left, and then sit back, relax and enjoy.

And for those of you who missed the original webcast, the audio portion of the webcast is at May 2000 archives.

April 21, 2000. You can now listen to (selected tracks) and/or buy online the Reverb Sun and Death Valley Coastline CDs at the Insect Surfers Page on earBuzz.com

. Of course you can always still send your money directly to David Arnson and purchase your Insect Surfers Merchandise here.

October 31, 1999. There used to be a complete listing of all the bands featured on this site at the bottom of each page on this site. The complete band list has now been moved to the Site Map.

Back in June 1997 when I started this site, the index at the bottom of the page seemed like a good idea. Due to the amazing growth of this site, I now think that the Site Map is a better way to do it.

I will continue to list the featured band of the month at the bottom of each page on this site.

December 3, 2002 CD Now is undergoing changes, and asked that ALL links be removed.
October 28, 1999 I signed up with CD Now.

October 22, 1999. The Chrome Oxide Music Collector Pages web site hit the big time! And I didn't even know it.

Tripod stats showed that this web site had more than 4,000 unique visitors last month (September 1999). Because of that, Tripod has increased my web space from 11mb to 50mb.

GRAPHIC IMAGE 'Cowabunga WebRing logo'
September 22, 1999. Today, I applied to join the Cowabunga Instrumental Surf Music WebRing. Jump to Other Insect Surfers Links, to surf the surf bands sites in this webring.

July 18, 1999. Insect Surfers go MP3. a song from Death Valley Coastline is in MP3.

March 31, 1999. I started a new section on this page, Classifieds. Now, if someone is interested in putting an ad here, or I find something I think is worthwhile, there is a place for it.

March 28, 1999. Vintage Guitar Magazine - April 1999 printed a review of the Insect Surfers, and both their CDs. It is now here in the Reviews - Other.

March 25, 1999. I just got my copy of Surfin' Senorita, a Herb Alpert/Tijuana Brass tribute CD. It has a new Insect Surfer track. Collect them all.

March 16, 1999. Thanks to a recent visitor to this page, we now have a logo for the Chrome Oxide Music Collectors Pages, as well as a new background and seperator bars. There may be additional changes to look forward to as well.

December 30, 1998. The Insect Surfers now have a new drummer, Jim Sciurba. I also sat down with Dave Arnson and went through some of his old press clippings, press kit, ... and figured out a few more items to include on this site. Among the changes are: Other Insect Surfers Links, which now includes links to a number of surf bands that the Insect Surfers have played with in the past. Reviews - Other which includes a few other reviews of the band. 1999 Studio and Live Shows was added, and the first show of 1999 is now listed here.

November 4, 1998. There is now a link from the Surf USA page of the Cowabunga instrumental surf music site.

You now have now excuse for not surfing on in. :-)

October 3, 1998. September 9, 1998 was drummer Mike Gregan's last show. The October 2, 1998 show had a former drummer. All shows will go on as scheduled, but they are looking for a new drummer.

August 17, 1998. I just spoke with Dave, and this is now the OFFICIAL INSECT SURFERS WEB SITE.

July 31, 1998. BAM Magazine printed a review of a live show from a few weeks age. See what you have been missing at Reviews - Other.

July 31, 1998. The Insect Surfers just sent me a copy of their old web site, and I am working on integrating bits and pieces of the text and graphics from it into my page. All is not lost. :-)

New sections added include: Reviews - Death Valley Coastline, Reviews - Reverb Sun, Reviews - Other. More text detail was added in many of the other sections. Graphic image changes included are band logo added, band photo circa 1994 added, ...

And now, there are even songs from from Death Valley Coastline which you can download and listen to on your home computer.

July 14, 1998. Added a new section: 1992 Live Shows (just found a flyer), and added a few other misc shows that I noticed that I had listed on flyers, and were not previously added to this page. Also added a few new items to 1998 Live Shows, actually new compilations (vinyl and CD) that the Insect Surfers are part of (and are currently available).

July 14, 1998. Added a few new sections: 1979 Origins, Merchandise 1980 Studio, 1981 Studio and 1983 Studio to help round out the informational content of this page.

July 13, 1998. I created this web page. I realized that I had been posting their upcoming shows on the BBS, and not deleting them. So to clean up the bulletin on the BBS, and preserve this historical (hysterical) data, I am moving it all to the web page.

INSECT SURFERS: Danny Sullivan, Jim Sciurba, Dan Valentie, David Arnson, at Sangria, Hermosa Beach, CA, October 21, 2000
INSECT SURFERS were originally formed in the summer of '79 in Washington, D.C. Touring the U.S. extensively, they also released several independent lp's and singles that placed as high as #25 on the national college radio charts.

Founding member David Arnson regrouped the band after moving to Los Angeles in 1985 with guitarist/sax player Dan "Dano" Sullivan resulting in the most dynamic lineup to date. Debuting at KXLU's "Surf Day" in June 1986, INSECT SURFERS have gone on to be featured on bills with such artists as Chris Isaak, B-52's, Jonathan Richman, Pylon, The Ventures, Dick Dale, Surfaris, etc. Even before June 1986, the INSECT SURFERS managed to play on the same stages as Iggy Pop, The Stranglers, Psychedelic Furs, Joan Jett, Echo and the Bunnymen, Revillos, etc.

Far from being a nostalgia act, INSECT SURFERS play guitar-fueled instrumental rock for tomorrow - today! The 50's and 60's stylings of such artists as Link Wray and Dick Dale are filtered through psychedelia, punk rock and soundtrack themes to produce a unique, invigorating and danceable blend. "Jetstream propulsion, dual lead twang", "The Clash meets the Ventures", "PsychedelicRangers", "Traditional yet progressive", are all taken from reviewers' descriptions.

INSECT SURFERS have drawn at clubs all over California and the Southwest as well as putting together their own local surf festivals in Los Angeles.

So...Submerge, hang twelve, and immerse yourself in the surfadelic sounds of the INSECT SURFERS.

Surf's   GRAPHIC IMAGE 'animated Lava Lamp'   Up!

The Lava Lamp Story.

Insect Surfers have been placing lava lamps on the backs of their amplifiers since their Los Angeles reincarnation in June 1986. After pointing out to the Lava Lite company that the Insect Surfers featured a Lava Lamp on their Reverb Sun CD/LP, the band managed to secure a sponsorship from them. This resulted in the delightful situation of having many free Lava Lamps for many years. But alas, the company grew more corporate and does not grant free Lava Lamps anymore. However, they still offer their fine product at a discount rate and the most recent acquisitions were two of the three foot tall Titan models. Visually they kick ass, but they take a grueling three hours to warm up! Meanwhile the "regulation issue" Lava Lamps can often be spotted in various Insect Surfer photos ...

Insect Surfers. A modern surf band with a hard rocking edge. Not just a re-creation of a 60's surf band. And not a cover band of 60's surf tunes. They mostly do original surf tunes, with an occasional historical cover tune. While sounding like a surf band, they bring a harder rocking edge to their sound with their twin guitar leads.

The visuals of their stage performance usually include lava lamps, various other multicolored flashing lights, occasional videos (surfing, or movie trailers or ....), slide show, .. displayed on the stage, and Dave dancing all over the stage while playing.

I have known about the Insect Surfers since the late 80's when I ran into Dave Arnson at the Sunset Junction Street Scene to see the Ringling Sisters.

Finally, in the early 1990s, my job changed enough so that I could actually see them live. I now try to see them live whenever I can, when they play in the Southern California area.

INSECT SURFERS
Insect Dave's D.C. Origins
[Top (page index)] [Up] [Down] [Bottom (site index)]

And now some comments about the Insect Surfers, from Insect Dave as recorded in Capital Rock by Mark Opsasnick, a book about current and former bands active in the Washington D.C. area.

I was born in Manhattan Sept 17th 1958, same bday as Hank Williams, Ken Kesey, Roddy McDowall!!

Lived briefly in Nashville and New Haven, moved to Bethesda in 1964 for 1st grade. Tommy Keene and I were in the same 2nd grade class at Ashburton Elementary School!

Moved to Chevy Chase in 1967, went to Kensington Jr. High School (now gone) and to Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, graduated class of 1976. That summer I saw the Slickee Boys first show at 'My Friends Place' in Takoma Park, which helped spur me and my BCC buddy Robert Fass and I to put together a one-shot band at Fort Reno Park called 'Feedback Forever'. We played Ramones 'Blitzkreig Bop', Bowie's 'Jean Genie', Patti Smith's versions of 'Gloria' and 'My Generation', Blue Oyster Cult's 'Red And The Black' (years before the Minutemen!) and 'Stairway To The Stars', along with a few original tunes. We woulda been great if we were remotely in tune with each other!! That October I saw all of the Ramones shows at the Childe Harolde Club. I remember Cerphe from WHFS was out front interviewing people about this new 'punk rock' phenomenon and I started raving to him about the Stooges...

I attended University of Delaware and University of Maryland for a couple years, I was studying for a Marine Biology (my major) exam in spring 1979 and I drew a picture of an insect surfing. I thought that the picture summed up what I wanted to do with a band, which was to do a surf sound with a modern or insect-y edge to it...

Meanwhile another BCC buddy, David Petersen, had been wanting to start up a band with me, we started writing songs and instrumentals in his room. I used to go see 'Razz' play, scores of times in fact, we got Bill Craig from 'Razz' and his friend Michael (later from 'Nightman') to come over and help us with a 4-track demo, our first instrumental titled 'Insect Surfer' had Danny Frankel from the Urban Verbs on bongos!! (Danny had grown up up 2 doors away from David's Silver Spring home).

We got another BCC buddy, Robert Fass, to play bass and we found drummer Dan Buccino by putting an ad in the 'Unicorn Times' paper. Dan was from Bethesda and had just graduated from Walt Whitman High School. He passed the audtion as he could play the particular galloping beats we used in our songs.

.. while in line to see the premire of the movie 'Alien', our friend Dan Collins introduced us to his pal Michael Duke, who played synthesizer. "let's get this guy!" Petersen said, "where the hell are we going to find something as cool as a synth player!!" Michael was from Bethesda too, he had just graduated from St. John's Military School, which he loathed. He was probably the only guy there who was listening to Eno, Stranglers, and the Velvet Underground!! He went by the name 'Mike Strider' for the band.
Dan Collins was graduating BCC High School May 1979, he had us Insect Surfers back him up as a group called 'Rinse n'Vac' for his english class project!!. Dan was as big as a fan as we were of the english artpunk band 'Wire'. We did a wire cover, 'Ex-Lion Tamer', one of his songs, and a bunch of Insect Surfer songs, so our unofficial debut was at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School!

Our next two gigs were playing Fort Reno Park (with Danny Frankel on percussion!) and then with Bad Brains, at Madam's Organ in Adams Morgan, which was basically a yippie commune house that ended up being the spawning ground for a whole scene of punk rock! This would be June/July 1979 at this point. Some of the bands playing the scene at this time included Bad Brains, Slickee Boys, Urban Verbs, Tru Fax and the Insaniacs, Trenchmouth, Nurses, Teen Idles (became Minor Threat), Enzymes, DCeats (Martha Hull went on to several bands, Keith went to Black Market Baby), Penetrators, Richmond's Beex, there was a new band almost every week that summer. The scene began to polarize a bit when bands like us and Tru Fax could get gigs at some of the bar clubs and punkier bands like Bad Brains could or would not. Also integral to the local scene was the now defunct 'DC Space' where every band at that time played.

So anyway!! Bill Asp who ran an indie record store in Arlington, saw us at DC Space and Madams Organ and really liked us, he became our manager. .he put out our records, using his initials William Asp to form 'wasp'(get it?) records. we played a cool gig at the Wilson Theatre in Arlington that summer, opening up for NYC's Model Citizens and Ann Arbor's 'Destroy All Monsters', who featured the Stooge's Ron Asheton and MC5's bassist. Oct 17th we opened up a show at the Ontario Theatre for the B-52's. We were pretty much the first DC punk/new wave band to really tour out of town, we did gigs all over the eastern seaboard and midwest from feb'80 to fall '84...September '81 was the last lineup for the first insect band.

INSECT SURFERS
REVIEWS - DEATH VALLEY COASTLINE
[Top (page index)] [Up] [Down] [Bottom (site index)]

Tiger Shark.mp3 - Death Valley Coastline

"These guys are one of the absolutely finest instrumental bands to be found anywhere, yet they have remained an underground band since their inception in Washington, D.C. in 1979. (They later relocated to Southern California.) It should be noted, however, that they do have a track on the Rhino Records' History of Surf Music box set. They do not just play surf rock though, calling up both punk and rock-a-billy, with a little Raybeats or Link Wray here and there. The songs are varied and tuneful without re-hashing the same riffs over and over.
"Tiger Shark","Re-entry", and "Volcano Juice" all venture way beyond mere surf progressions. Arnson and Sullivan's guitar lines squirm, shake and recoil all over the map. They even cover the Buzzcocks' "Walking Distance". If you like music of any kind, it is hard not to like the Insect Surfers."
Anthony Mark Happel - Chattanooga Free Press - September, 1997

"I've always figgered L.A.'s Insect Surfers for a tight, musicianly kind of instro surf band (sort of the opposite of Sacramento's Tiki Men). Hell, these bugs have been playing the crap since 1979, you'd assume they'd have their chops down--and they do......Nonetheless, there are plenty of fine moments here, particularly the Dick Dale-derived numbers "Diamondback"and "Bengazi", the latter of which adds shades of Ennio Morricone twang for that lonesome big-sky sound. The "instant atmosphere--just add reverb" credo is taken to its extreme in "Re-entry", and a few layers of analog delay are then heaped on to blast it back interstellar. "Huntington Beer Party" is exactly what it sounds like: sloppy-drunk sax growls and uncontrolled staccato picking, all frothing over tranced-out tiki tom-tom work."
John Pecorelli - Alternative Press - April, 1997

"After a slight drummer attendance delay, veteran instrumentalists, The Insect Surfers, impressed the Hotel Utah gathering in lessons on tight instrumental execution. Songs included 77 Gaza Strip, Stingray,....Polaris, Bouzouki and more. Never-to-be contained wildman Dave Arnson gave the crowd his lesson in Jumpology 101 which no doubt was given to HIM by Pete Townsend. Cheers to these veterans......a swell group of people and superb musicians. Enrico would be proud. By the way, we missed you Monica, by the way : ( Come back and play again, gang!
The Insects had played earlier in the evening LIVE from KFJC aboard Phil Dirt's Surf's Up radio show and also got a late start. They hid the fact that they were tired real well. Late '97 CD rumors here too, folks. :-)"
excerpted from COWABUNGA Surf Discussion List

"L.A.'s Insect Surfers have never been obsessed with slavish imitations of vintage sounds so much as recapturing the proto-punk abandon of early instrumental rock. Like San Francisco's Mermen, the Insect Surfers often veer into heady psychedelia, generating euphoric washes of reverb, twang and crashing cymbals on Death Valley Coastline"(Marlin Records)
Guitar Player December '96

"Forget about Jimmy Hoffa. The pyramids? Ha! You want to solve a real mystery? Then figure out why Insect Surfers haven't been signed. It's not for lack of historical significance. The Insects were one of the most important bands in the '79-'80 surf revival. It's not for lack of talent. These guys are upper echelon players and they have their own idenitfiable sound. They had to wait forever for this CD to see the light of day, and after forever, they gave up and put it out themselves. Shame on the industry. But at least it's and it's something else. David Arnson and Dan Sullivan are the balanced pair of guitar greats from left to right in your (hopefully cranked) headphones. They each have a clear understanding of how psychedelia should be woven into surf instrumentals.
Songs like "77 Gaza Strip" and "Mig Alley" carry the beat and the feel of surf into exotic, but heavy, new territory. This is a style of surf that I find very magnetic....... Besides being important as a surf album, this is a very important guitar album that demands careful listening. If young guitarists hole up in their rooms and learn all these tunes, the future of the genre looks bright. I know it, lots of other people know it, and after one listen, you'll know it."
DJ Johnson - Cosmik Debris Ezine

REVIEWS - REVERB SUN

Meteorite Shower.mp3 - Reverb Sun

To end on a local note, the Insect Surfers recently handed me a tape called Reverb Sun. I had heard about this band, but never had the chance to see it in action. Despite the off-beat name, the Insect Surfers -- vocalists-guitarists David Arnson and Danny Sullivan, bassist-vocalist Michael O'Neil, and drummer John Covertino -- purvey an authentic brand of instrumental and vocal surf music, a la the Ventures, Dick Dale, etc. The fourteen tunes, with titles such as "Meteorite Show," "Gary Busey," "Zuma Slam," and "Insect Stomp," are well-crafted and truly boss. Apparently the Insect Surfers originate in the South Bay, so they don't play concerts in L.A.-Hollywood too often. But they do play, so keep an eye out if this type of music is your thing -- they're diggable!
Los Angeles Reader, February 2, 1990

"Finally, you can always find the soul of rock 'n' roll among SoCal's handful of crack instrumental groups....Reverb Sun ...Insect Surfers give us 14 twinkling, jangling, vibration-laden original tunes that are wholly authentic, never anachronistic, and ripe with verve. David Arnson and Danny Sullivan's two-pronged guitar whammy never lets up: They're snappy on "Meteorite Shower"; fiesta-like on "Mojave" (which also bears Sullivan's gnarly sax accents); swaggering on "Gary Busey"; poppy for "Zuma Slam"; staccato in"Hot 'n' Glassy"; and rambunctious on "Insect Stomp". They even take a stab at worldbeat surf with "Bouzouki"(a Greek mandolin). This album winds up with the anthemic "Surf, Sun and Sound", which makes even a gremmie like me wanna grab a board and shoot the curls"
BAM Magazine

"Although promoted as a progressive surf band which mixes influences of the present with the classic surf of the past, the Insect Surfers --originally from Washington, D.C. before they landed in L.A.(surf city) in the mid-'80's are fortunately nothing of the kind. Surf music, as any Ventures record will prove, is eternal. The Insect Surfers fare best without vocals, and rarely attempt them....... For the most part, the band sticks to bumbling (as in bee) twang and reverb guitar and commands a good portion of the established lexicon of surf -- cool saxaphone, motorcycles in the recording studio and drum solos in short, bearable bursts. The dual lead guitarists, David Arnson and Danny Sullivan man their assigned channels -- Dave plays on the and Danny fills out the right-- like a couple of bloodthirsty mosquitos, making nearly the whole of Reverb Sun the surfin' soundtrack of the year, even for those of us in the Midwest, where surf is mostly just a state of mind."
M.M. - Chicago Reader

"...Danny Sullivan and David Arnson's guitar work show energy and inventiveness. Besides a band who can tell a story without lyrics must be doing something right."

The Insect Surfers Mojave Reef
Label: Marlin 03 CD

It's about time! Six years in the making, and well worth the wait. The Insect Surfers' new CD is just about as sophisticated as it gets without losing the surf and rock and roll edge. This is a glorious album of incredible writing and playing. Maximum recommendation here!

Picks: Silver Coast, Reptile Boots, Horizon Riders, Coolangatta, Tethys, Dewey's Dead, Batwave, Flamin' Eddie's Dragstrip, Ocotillo, Asteroid, Black Sea, Electric Marlin, Nomad, Ursa Minor, Starfish Ranch / Mojave, Baja

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Silver Coast ****

Slowly rising from the sea and beautiful guitarscapes, Silver Coast rides on a circulating melody line atop a great rhythm. This fine track is is a fine example of the swirling perfection that the Insect Surfers are capable of. Gorgeous ringing tone and throbbing essence of surf, with long howling feedback and grumbling bass slowly releasing the track as it fades under the waves.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reptile Boots ***

Lizard skinned rhythms and pumpin' drums bump under a modern semi-psychedelic melodic melody line. The contrast between the foreground backtrack and distant lead creates a haunting sound. Quite nice!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Horizon Riders *****

This is one of the best new songs from the Insect Surfers. It's an infectious spaghetti western with very visual psychedelic swirls. The rolling cowboy beat and Morricone-ish melody are a splendid Southwest epic! The many textural changes add a sense of evolving story lines. Great!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coolangatta *****

Like a chunkier version of Rake and the Surftones with Link Wray close by, Coolangatta pulses with power and a great rhythm, plus some spectacular guitar tone and sustain. This is one fine track!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tethys *****

Tethys captures your ears right from the start. The alternating melody line is captivating and intricate. Each guitar brings its own brand of delivery to the song, with many fine changes in texture and tone. Tethys is a magnificent track.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dewey's Dead ****

On the verge of dirge inversion, Dewey's Dead grumbles about the loss in a never ending tubular ride way, with thunder in the tom toms and a relentless adventure in the rhythm.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Batwave ****

Batwave is dissonant and angular, with intense tortured ambiance and plenty of attack. It's dark and dangerous, and haunting too. The howling adds to the fright factor. Excellent!
Sci-Fi Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flamin' Eddie's Dragstrip ****

The dragsters rev up, the announcer calls the race, and then the guitars kick in. This long time Insect Surfers finally makes it to disc, and way past due I say! Great grodie fuzz and liquid guitar, an utterly infectious melody, Church Key whammy dips... what more do you need? Edgy hotrod cool!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ocotillo *****

The warm melody of Ocotillo flows like a ride down the Baja coast in search of a perfect summer break. Completely cool, with a Spanish edge and pumping bass line. Fine track!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asteroid ****

Space echo guitar, backwards coolness, mind-game escapes... and that's just the intro. In an odd way, this reminds me of the introduction to Shuggie Otis' Freedom Flight. It's more a soundscape than a song, but is quite satisfying.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Black Sea *****

This is an amazing new song! It rides on an undulating rhythm, born of western skies and summer adventure. Compelling and exquisitely arranged, Black Sea demands your attention. Vibrato drama, silky fluid lines, psychedelic effects, and a call to the open highway. Magnificent! No, it's Perfect!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Electric Marlin ****

Electric Marlin heads down the coast to glassy walls unknown. This track is rhythm dominated and full of adventure, fast and delicate, and like the call of the wild. Excellent!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nomad *****

Another stellar Insect tune loaded with energy and twin lead style, Nomad has been in the Insect Surfers set for quite a while. Heavier than in the early days, yet sparkling in a modern way. Fine song.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ursa Minor [live] ****

Like a scene from a distant space station, Ursa Minor is moody and mystical, with a solid air of cold vacuum adventure. It's a soundscape that often opens Polaris these days. It stands alone well on it's own.
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starfish Ranch / Mojave *****

The upbeat adventure of Starfish Ranch is always more than friendly and attractive. This infectious and circular melody line always brings a grin to my mug. The whammy action and writhing guitaristry are very powerful. Mojave is transitioned into. It is made of the rumble of the decay, with haunting feedback whale calls and moody fine drums. Quite a soundscape!
Surf Instrumental Stereo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Baja *****

Lee Hazelwood's classic Baja is very nicely rearranged by the Insect Surfers. The sea breaks gently on the shore, the guitar rings out, and a softened delivery adds a sense of beauty and calm. Excellent counterbalances between the two guitars makes this one of the best versions around!

Since the Insect Surfers are not a purist or "old school" surf band I decided that we needed our own forum of expression for a more modern surf/instrumental presentation. So in January 2000 we started the "Acid Beach Party" with 6 bands playing half hour sets to the accompaniment of psychedelic/psychotronic projections and videos, giant twister (4 twister boards taped together) tournaments, and MCing by KXLU's Reverend Dan. Our goal was for no one to be bored at any time! So far, we are up to number four, and they have all gone great ... Bands featured so far (besides the Insect Surfers) have been:
Davie Allan & the Arrows, Banned From The Beach, Black Widows, Boardwalkers, Double Naught Spy Car, Dynotones, Neptunas, Pollo Del Mar, Rancheras, Reventlos, Slacktone, Spi-Fi, Surf Kings.

Hey...this was the best gig in a long time...hat's off as well to Fred Kiko from KXLU for his multi-media visual assault with two projectors showing pieced together 16mm clips of some very bizarre and entertaining material...

ACID BEACH PARTY
The Insect Surfers are long-time sparkplugs of the west coast surf music scene, and Arnson - a major innovator who credits his sound to the influence of the cult bands Television and Quicksilver Messenger Service...
The Insect Surfers were the highlight of the evening, and most in the crowd had come to see them. Their driving instrumentals featuring original material such as "77 Gaza Strip" and "Tiger Shark" had cultists undulating in their own private although not necessarily mutually exclusive Idahos and Arnson's guitar pyrotechnics more than honored his rock and roll forebears. Their CD's, by the way, are available through their website (http://www.chromeoxide.com/insect.htm), or at Rhino Records; the most recent, "Death Valley Coastline," kind of sums up the nature of the wide-open So. Cal. space which gave rise to surf music.

Hats (and antennas) off to Dave Insect for pulling off one of the best live show line ups of psychedelic surf and "push the envelope" instrumental music events, ever. Mr. T's was full to capacity and overflowing with happy instrumental fans last night. ...
Next up were INSECT SURFERS who always deliver a crowd pleasing hook oriented dueling guitar surf sound both traditional at times and psychedelic other times. They opened with Horizon Rider a psychedelic spaghetti western wonder tune that shows off the dueling guitars of Arnson and Sullivan. There are quite a few new songs, some with greek folk and Mediterranean threads and ringing harmonics goin on. Insects get in some wild ride psychedelic jams. Dave was definitely the man of the hour for putting this supercool show together - he had three screens of video and slides going - some sergeant peppers, some ultraman, some wahini surfers having their way with the tubes - plenty of visual stimulation. ...

Insect Surfers at Mr. T's Bowl.
You hate to use the phrase surf music when describing Insct Surfers because their instrumentals often display a versatility and grandeur that transcend the perceived limitations of the genre. Take Horizon Riders from the group's recent CD, Mojave Reef (marlin) David Arnson's and Dano Sullivans riffs quite properly evoke sunsets and big waves, but there are also several passages that shimmer with an almost prog-rock expansiveness. Instead of coming off as kitschy or retro, the quartet use the beach as a metaphor, as a jumping-off point for deeper, moodier explorations-often psychedelic, but never succumbing to mere noodling, as on the coiled lead-guitar tangles of Ocotilo and Coolangatta. The group's roots stretch back to 1979 in Washington D.C., where Arnson was influenced just as much by the Real Kids and the Ramones as by the Ventures, and these Surfers have been an underrated local institution since re-forming in L.A. in 1985. Music For Nimrods BAND OF DISTINCTION Award!

INSECT SURFERS play surf music...psychedelic, frantic, cutting edge surf music that only a kid from NYC who moved to DC and used to buy ice cream from some Hagen Daas employee named Henry Rollins could conceive. Lead insect guitarist Dave Arnson is that kid. Plus he defies the laws of gravity while soloing!
The Insect Surfers are one of six winners of the very first Music For Nimrods BAND OF DISTINCTION Award! This award is presented to any band that upholds the fine traditions of rock and roll, mainly those of purity, enthusiasm and starvation. The Insect Surfers is excellent, and I want the world to know about them. So I'll spin your records on the show, and post your faces on my website. Keep up the good work.
    Thanks for the great music!

INSECT SURFERS AT THE LOS ANGELES FORUM
we were hastily contacted by the l.a forum 2 days before playing, womens basketball team the sparks were having a beach day, passing out beach towels, etc., and needed a surf band to play at different points at the game.
arriving at the forum, we took our equipment by elevator and dolly up to a little 8 foot square platform with a rail around it, it was all the way at the top of the the back wall's nosebleed section, not too far from the giant american flag that everybody salutes while the anthem is being sung. evidently the lakers have a band w/trumpets and stuff that plays up there from time to time, our coordinator said that they spill out on to the bleacher seats cause they are a big band, man, cause we could just barely fit up there!
i was given a headset that the coordinator would cue me through, telling me when we were about to play and when to cut off. this was a bit of a challenge 'cause the headset was attached by a cable to my belt, the little belt box had a little switch that i had to press whenever i needed to talk.
a couple times the guy would tell me your'e about to stop,or cut it off, and i'd have to press the thing while playing, to say o.k.!!
we were given time to play 3 of our tunes at the pregame events (in between player interviews, a dj spinning hip-hop tunes, commercials, game promos, little kid dance routines, etc.,) we played gary busey, meteorite shower, and diamondback.
at halftime they wanted us to play something very recognizable, so we played wipeout at three sequences of some game/contest they had where parents and kids would come out and do stuff with hula hoops, miniature basketballs, and an inflateable kiddie pool! more promos, dance routines, etc followed and then we did a version of tequila! i was so sure that a crowd of several thousand people listening to that song would surely yell out the word tequila at the appropriate moments, but if they did, we sure couldn't hear them! hmmm, so much for my planned crowd manipulation!! also, fortunately, we were at the exact end of a verse when we were told to cut off the music!
after that, we weren't scheduled to play 'til after the game. the coordinator did say that there would be a brief contest sequence with more kids bouncing basketballs that we could play through, that would last about 20 seconds(!). and it did! 20 seconds! and we totally missed it, that's ok, the dj was playing some hip hop through it and i don't know what wouldn't sound kinda retarded for 20 seconds anyway...hey what are we, shadowy men or something?!
our drummer jimbo was pretty funny thoughout, he would do a roll and hit the cymbal when the teams would do the free throws, and occasionally played along with the go team-type chants...
kxlu surfwave dj jim dunfrund showed up to say hello and that it sounded pretty good, it was nice to see a familiar face, and also to meet dugger, the guy who'd booked us! also much thanks to bellrays and black widows guitarist tony fate for filling in for our guitarist danno who couldn't make it, tony has actually played with us many times in the past.
at show's end, after some more big-screen promos and a player interview, we got to play bouzouki, electric marlin, polaris, flamin' eddie's dragstrip, and volcano juice as the masses streamed out! i was reminded of the sequence in the movie woodstock where hendrix is playing but the movie keeps showing you scenes of people leaving and the final cleaning up!
all in all it was a very surreal and very fun experience, i have to give the l.a. forum and the sparks organization a lot of credit for exposing surf music to the public. it was also fun to have some experience playing along to hair-trigger timed tv-soundbyte sequences, this was a gig where you really had to be on your toes!
and finally, the fact that the sparks team won by 20 points was something to be truly proud of!! those women rock!!
    instrumentally yours,

AND FINALLY - ATTENTION ECLECTIC INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR MUSIC FANS:
The Insect Surfers have been putting out cool instrumental guitar music for a number of years. Powered by guitarists Dave Arnson and Dan Sullivan (who also plays saxophone), the Insect Surfers blend eclectic rock and surf for a great sound. Dave, who has been influenced by players like Davie Allan ("SPOTLIGHT" December '98), John Cippolina, and Tom Verlaine, founded the original Insect Surfers in 1979 in Washington, D.C. He moved to the West Coast in '85 and reformed the band (with different players) in '86, and they've been together ever since. Dave and Dan are both Gibson guitar fans - Dave plays a '61 SC Special through a Fender SUPER Reverb and Dan shoulders a late-'70s Flying V through a Fender Twin Reverb. Presently, the band plays two to three gigs each month and they're considering recording a new CD later this year.
Their two previous projects, Reverb Sun (Marlin Records CD001), and Death Valley Coastline (Marlin Records CD002), were very catchy. Reverb Sun was originally recorded in '89 and re-pressed on CD in '97. The contrasting guitar styles keep things interesting on tracks like "Meteorite Shower" (an attention-grabbing opening number), "Polaris" (cool tones and sonic variety on this medium-tempo rocker), "Halley's Beach" (very catchy, nice straight-ahead rockin' groove) and the "Insect Stomp" (a Munsters-sounding keyboard with sax and loads of great guitar tone). Death Valley Coastline was originally released in '94 and was re-pressed in '96. Faves include "Tiger Shark" (appropriately aggressive sound with plenty of cool chords), "Re-Entry" (ominous-sounding in spots), "Volcano Juice" ("cycle-delic" guitar work courtesy of Davie AlIan - "SPOTLIGHT" December '98) and "MIG Alley" (titled correctly, this one sounds like gunfire). To get copies, write to Marlin Records. P.O.Box 661441, Los Angeles, CA 90066. And check out the Insect Surfers' web site at http://www.chromeoxide.com/insect.htm.
Vintage Guitar - April 1999

"OK, I just gotta say that John Cippolina was a genius. Listen to the two instrumentals on the first Quicksilver LP. Also, check out Dave Arnson's playing with the Insect Surfers. He is the only other guitar player I know of that plays with the same vibrato. Finally, I had a chance to wander aimlessly through the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame last year. Lots of semi cool stuff, but what blew me away was Cippolina's amp rig set up in a huge glass box. If you have any idea what he played through you will understand my awe. If you don't, forget it. I could never even begin to explain..."

"... Bar Deluxe was soooo incredibly hot last Friday (July 17, 1998) that there was no way to enjoy eating anything (you'd have to smuggle in your own grub anyways). The uncomfortable swampland temperature caused two of my rock'n'roll sidekicks to throw in the towel early, but not before we enjoyed a set by the Insect Surfers, who managed to tear through their reverb smothered anthems without sacrificing any of the usual zeal-guitarist Dave Arnson obviously immune to the heat due to spending his formative years in Washington D.C. ...
Night Fever by Jim Freek, BAM Magazine, July 31, 1998

The Insect Surfers caught the wave of creative energy which infected the CD area in 1979 and were one of the first alternative bands to incorporate an instrumental surf style in their music. In May of '80, they made their first appearance at the 9:30, which drummer Buccino says, "was easily the best club in town." Speaking not only of the band but also of the scene, Buccino adds, "most of us back then...we might have been kids, but we were really having fun, and we were really wanting to try to share that with the audience." The Surfers' music clearly reflects that attitude, but if you're expecting to hear Jan and Dean revisited, prepare for a refreshing surprise. Their highly energetic and inventive music has traces of Dick Dale, Link Wray, garage and sci-fi, but it's thoroughly original and highly contagious. Founding member Dave Arnson "started the Surfers to combine the energy of the Ramones and the B-52s with the cerebral instruumental approach of Tom Verlane's Television and Wire. We found our answer in surf music or a hybrid thereof."
The Surfers were one of the boldest (and hardiest) of the bands associated closely with the 9:30 Club. They toured extensively, sought and gained college radio airplay all over the country, and helped push the edge of the fun and friendly CD alternative scene into new territory-up and down the East Coast and on occasional forays to points west. Arnson has kept the Surfer sound going, since moving to Los Angeles and regrouping in 1985, but this holiday reunion in 1995 was special for the original members. Buccino describes it as "overwhelming emotionally." For Arnson, it evoked memories of "really exciting and colorful times" when the scene was "like a big dance party. The late 70s and early 80s were a Great time for music."
liner notes 9:30 Live (2 CD set) Adelphi Records 1997

Insect Surfers - Polaris. "Thank God everybody's nice and clean together. You know, every band I've heard so far seems to be well disciplined and well put together. Just because it's not blowing me off this Earth... That guy in the movie, Crossroads, that guitarist, Stevie Vai. He blew me off the Earth. Stevie Ray Vaughn. I played with him. He also played with that type of intensity. [listens] I see a guy on the nose of a longboard, sun goin' down, wind blowing through his hair, going across the face of a wave, like in Endless Summer. This is real nice. It's music I wouldn't blow up a building with, but it's music that I'd lay back, shut the lights out, and listen to. It's well done.
The Next Wave: Dick Dale Scores The Surf Sounds Of The '90s, Dick Dale interviewed by Dave Arnson, BAM Magazine, September 9, 1994

Rock 'n'Rollo
How many Times have you found yourself literally slammed, without pity, into oblivion at your favorite spot? It's the type of experience that leaves a lasting impression - one that stories are based on, legends are founded upon and yes, finally, even songs are written about. Zuma Slam, the first song with actual bodyboarding lyrics, has hit the airwaves: "On a life with fins, el rollos and a belly spin/you cut the glass/while in the tube with your board./And future Frank/he says, 'I am doing the Zuma Slan.'"
The Insect Surfers were founded by Dave Arnson, 30, in the summer of 1979 in Washington D.C. They quickly drew a strong following and were soon opening for such bands as the B-52s, Joan Jett, and the Stranglers. The Insect Surfers are now powering out their tunes in Southern California - a more appropriate environment for their "insectoid" brand of music.
Besides Arnson, who sings, and plays guitar, other members of the band are: Dan "Danno" Sullivan, 26, who plays guitar, sax and keyboards, sings vocals and writes lyrics; Mike O'Neil, 22, who plays bass; and John Covertino (ageless) of the L.A.Band, The Fugitive Kind, who slam-dances and drums.
When asked why the bodyboarding lyrics, Arnson replied: "No one had done it before, and I am a bodyboarding junkie, so why not be the first? I want to do for bodyboarding music what Dick Dale did for surf music. "Zuma Slam" starts with a crash of a chord that imitates the sound of a Zuma slam; I wan that to be our trademark sound."
With plans around the corner to unveil their second album, it won't be long before other bands follow suit and coin their own bodyboarding song(s). Rumors have it that there are already some hot bobyboarders puttin in the time on strings, drums and other instruments. Will we soon see a "Yo, Bodyboarding Music Video Hour" on MTV?

The Surfaris, Paul Johnson and the Packers, Insect Surfers - Gazzaris, Hollywood, October 8, 1987
O.K., banish me from credibility for reviewing a show I had a hand in booking, but, hey, almost on one else showed up, so I'l like to take this opportunity to give credit to where it's due and deserved, to the Surfaris of today. I burned them in a review in D.A.G. # 1, as their set at the Forum left a lot to be desired, and I must continue to belch about a creeping sense of horrid "nostalgia" in a portion of their act. There's no need for it, when you have a band who is above and beyond all nostalgia cliches to begin with. As proven by the opening set by the Insect Surfers', surf music is far from a thing of the past. Dave Arnson's introduction to "Zuma Slam" accentuated this, and perhaps the best aspect of the evening was to hear a group like this through Gazzari's monumnetal sound system, usually wasted on the drudgery of heavy metal bozos. When applied to a real rock'n'roll band (as opposed to loud and pretentious primp-posers), it's enough to make a performer's eyeballs wide with amazement!...and it's here also that I will commend the Insect Surfers for their sound. What makes them so special is not their linkage with authenticity (which makes them great to hear in the first place), nor their variety-oriented approach (which is brilliant enough to include both instrumentals and vocals---Arnson tells me one of his biggest influences is the SURFIN' U.S.A. album!). It ain't even their unique approach of trade-off lead guitar-extended surf jamming (which only leads to excitement and never falls into that dangerous territory of ponderousness which ties a group to the despicable term "Progressive"). Nope, it's none of these, and to break the rule of three, it's not even the absolutely bitchen way that Arnson leaps, squirms, and wriggles around the stage while playing guitar for added punctuation. You wann know what makes the Insect Surfers so fabulous?...!...? It's the way the take all of those things, melt them in to one bottle of goop, fill them into a mold, and cook up some incredible edibles that would satisfy the thirstiest hunger for SURF! The ambidextrous Danny Sullivan not only plays lead and rhythm guitar, but also sax and keyboards, while occasionally glancing behind himself to get an extra charge from the surfing movies usually being screened behind his band somewhere. Not only that, these guys both come up with some brilliant originals to boot (that doesn't mean someone should illegitimately press 'em up!) The bass player and drummer both look like refugees from the last trip to Mexico, and they are living with the same attitude they had down there!...and you know what? Somehow, Dave Arnson looks like he stepped right out of a"Murph The Surfy" cartoon by Rick Griffin, directly into REAL LIFE...heck, dem are the kind of people ya gotta have around!

Insect Surfers - 1988 Demo Tape
Perhaps todays best original surf group is The Insect Surfers. Original, meaning that rather than concentrating on covers, these guys spend most of their time writing new surf instrumentals, and thank goodness for that, because they've come up with plenty of whoppers! This is the first cassette by the new band, featuring Danny Sullivan. Dave Arnson has put out on LP (in 1980) and also a 45 and an EP. The new version of the group has become quite a popular attraction not only at Toe's Tavern, but also plays the Hollywood circuit quite a bit. Hence, the neccesity for a tape, I mean I always see people asking for their music, so Here Tis! The opening "Insect Stomp" is a ska tune, much in the style of The Halibuts. This here is a little twisted, however, featuring an organ part right out of "The Munsters". The real meat and potatoes rolls into high gear with Arnson's "Zuma Slam", a bodysurfing song supreme. It's about time that bodysurfers had an anthem! Some lyrics: "On a life with fins, el rollo and a belly spin"...Honolulu Lulu would be proud. The chords kinda come down with that WHOMP you get a Zuma...ouch! "Halley's Beach" is a melodic gutar tune, featuring sweet harmonics and an undercurrent rhythm, good listening, but next is "Polaris", which has become a surf mood classic...at least for those who get to hear it! This type of melody and feel is unique and powerful...kinda sticks i your head like surf wax on a board. Sullivan's dramatic "Outsider" rambles along in high gear, featuring stops and starts that highlight a perfect guitar sound...this one is really hot! Drummer John Convertino should be commended for his fine work here. Closing the all-too-short set is the miracalous "Sunbeam", no doubt a tune Mark R. Daver has been goin' nuts over. Opening with a superb dual lead guitar melody, just good and long enough to make you feel as if this is gonna be a hot instrumental...then....HARK! It's a voacl!...and a damn good one, too. This verse has a majestic, building quality to it, like an aspiration being fulfilled, then back to that hot chorus...then, the mid-break, which is the clincher of 'em all. Sounding as if you'd just stepped into a ritual flower-power dance at Swami's (famous surf spot over here near Carlsbad), complete with a fife-type solo right out of "California Dreaming"...then you hear some stock Hot Rod sound effects (sounds like a serious hemi to me) rumbling through the break, leading into Dave Arnson's over-the-clouds Flying V surf guitar solo...then back to that hot instrumental chorus...WOW! This is like the great lost surf group...if say the Crossfires or someone had the guts follow some missing link-progressive impluse all the way through to 1967, it still wouldn't have sounded quite like this. And I know this group has a lot more fantastic originals stocked up in their backlog, because I go to about half of their gigs, just to hear this stuff! Hopefully, someone with money and artistic intelligence (not to mention rock and roll spirit, a tought threesome to come by these days) will get it together and help get some of this brilliance out....till then, this cassettte does quite fine. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED!
Look! Listen! Vibrate! Smile! by Domenic Priore, Dumb Angel Gazette

".....David Arnson and sons provide an amazing late 70's platformed desert wave vision of space and sea. Very good writing and playing L.A. band with a solid following....... Wonderful interplay between the lead and the rhythm, very melodic and plenty of live energy".
Phil Dirt

"....they recreate a beach-blanket, frat-rock ambience that'll cheer any purist within earshot"
Fred Mills

"One of L.A.'s hottest unsigned bands"
Music Connection

    "....A great set of jams.."
Flipside

"It's tough to review music with no vocals, but this one has a guitar that just about speaks. This is guitar-intensive surf that's different from the pop surf of today...more rock and punk added to this mix..."
Giant Robot

Dave Arnson's Insect Surfers, which somehow manages to be faithful to the old instro ways yet still sounds thoroughly modern and even a bit surreal, has been kicking major ass these days."
BAM Magazine

    "Swirling, swooping,hang-ten-in-the-ectoplasm instrumentals..."
L.A. Weekly

The Insect Surfers' initial major radio impact came with the release of the "Wavelength" EP/LP in 1981. The record, with no professional push generated airplay nationwide in the alternative radio network, hitting charts in "Rockpool" (without even using their distribution). "Progressive Media" and "D.I.Y.". The release of two singles has kept the radio marketplace aware of the band's presence.
?

Quite possibly the Washington Area's most popular rock band. One of the few local bands of this era potentially on the verge of national recognition. There are two ways to reach "star" statys: one is to get extremely lucky; the other is to work hard and tour often.
Washington's City Paper

Manage to infuse '60s rock with an '80s sensibility. Delightfully cacaphonous, complete with clashing guitar and stomping bass lines... imaginative electronic extrapolations. The band continuse to grow by absorbing other novel elements and influences.
Washington Post

Not hard to imagine that this band would have been high in the top 40 in a better world.

INSECT SURFER FOR A DAY
[Top (page index)] [Up] [Down] [Bottom (site index)]

What do you do when you have a gig, and one of the band members is not available? Why you recruit a replacement for that show.

The Insect Surfers have had a number of replacements sit in with the band (for complete sets, or sometimes just a couple of tunes) who were members of: Black Widows/Bellrays/... (Tony Fate-guitar),
Slacktone/Dick Dale/Concrete Blonde/Lita Ford/Jon & The Nightriders/Agent Orange/... (Dusty Watson-drums),
Halibuts, Los Straightjackets, ... (Pete Curry-drums)
Boardwalkers (Dan Valentie-guitar, Mark Hoeschler-bass, Jeff Utterback-drums),
Lawndale (Jack Skelley),
Reventlos (Greg Staples-guitar, Lee Kix-drums),
Deoras (Steve Bidrowski-drums),
Chum (Adrien Anthony-drums),
Popdefect/Project K (Nick Scott-drums),
Mermen (Martyn Jones-drums),
Pollo Del Mar (Ferenc Dobronyi-bass),
...

And those are just the ones that I know about. I am sure there are more.

Reverb Sun
Tape on our own Marlin Records--$6.00 postpaid
CD on our own Marlin Records--$15.00 postpaid

Tracks: Meteorite Shower, Ghost Train, Polaris, Mojave, Gary Busey, Zuma Slam, Grunion Run, Outsider, Halley's Beach, Pleasure Point, Hot n' Glassy, Insect Stomp, Bouzouki, Surf, Sun, and Sound.

This originally came out in 1991 on Skyclad Records as a CD and LP. Unfortunately, the label went out of business soon afterwards and in fact owes us lots of money!

Fortunately, we own all the rights and can now afford to present it to you on our own Marlin Records as a cassette or CD. Classic Insect material!! Two songs feature our deservedly rare vocals!! Plus touches of sitar guitar, wind chimes, organ and sax on tunes you'll cherish for millennia!

MERCHANDISE
East/West
10" vinyl on Dionysus records--$10.00 postpaid

Tracks: Tiger Shark, Razorback, Third Stone, Starfish Ranch(live), 77 Gaza Strip, Bengazi, Jack the Ripper(live)

We stole the title and logo from the classic Paul Butterfield Blues Band album East/West, which ends with a cool 11 minute raga-rock jam...well, uh, we end up with a couple of middle eastern sounding tumes and our 5 minute live version of the Link Wray classic "Jack the Ripper", hey, close enough for a tribute.....

We combine a futuristic computer-generated fractal wave on the front cover with a cool sepia-toned photo of us and a hot rod on the back cover--we're lookin' backwards into the future or something like that!!!...dig it today!

GRAPHIC IMAGE 'endless summer parody'

T-SHIRTS
our logo on size L and XL--$10.00 postpaid

High quality black Hanes T-shirt printed with our logo of the two insect surfers against the sunset-bright purple, red and yellow--an amazing value and it looks so damn cool.

You know, we ripped off our logo from the original poster of the "Endless Summer" movie....we turned the silhouettes of the two surfers in the background into insects... I finally met John Van Hammersveldt, the guy who drew the poster--I was terrified he'd be pissed off! But he was actually psyched about the design....Thanks, John!

Of course you can always still send your money directly to David Arnson and purchase your Insect Surfers Merchandise here. Although it will probably take a little more effort. But it is worth it!

December 10, 2002.
Back in October 1999 I put up links to CD-Now so that visitors could easily link to the related band pages and instantly see which items were still in print/available for purchase. CD-Now no longer has that option. For the moment I am putting in Amazon.com search boxes. Amazon.com doesn't easily allow for links to individual band pages in the same way that CD-Now used to. So, instead of me being able to create direct links, I have put up the Amazon.com search box instead. So you can still go to a page with the various bands products, buy you now need to go through a search box.

As always, let me know what you think.
