CHROME OXIDE: WRITER

Under the pen name of Chrome Oxide I write humorous science fiction and fantasy. However, I've been accused of writing murder mysteries since I murder the English language and it's a mystery how I get published.

When people ask why I write humorous science fiction and fantasy, I explain that my reality check bounced.

FAQ

When Did I Start Writing?
Back in June, 2010, I was inspired to start writing because of a book I read. It was so bad, I set out to see if I could do worse. I failed. If I'd known how much work was involved, I would have started writing anyway.

What Makes Me Think I'm Capable of Writing?
My informal education as a writer began in my late teens and early twenties when I started reading science fiction and fantasy. One piece of writing advice that is repeated quite frequently, is write what you know. I write SF&F because that is what I enjoy reading.

What is my Formal Education?
My formal education in writing began in 2010 when a Clarion graduate and published author, Jude-Marie Green, encouraged me to attend her writing group. Under her guidance and that of Shauna Roberts and Jim Young, both published authors, and the rest of the members of the Orange County Science Fiction Writers Orbit, I progressed enough to win the published finalist award in the Writers of the Future annual writing contest. My story, "Cop For A Day," was published in volume 29.

As the published finalist, I attended their week-long writers' bootcamp where the teachers included David Farland, Tim Powers, Mike Resnick, Kevin J. Anderson, and a number of other well known authors.

Other Education?
I attend and volunteer at many of the writers conferences put on by the West Coast Writers Conferences.

What Do I Think Of Writers' Groups?
I currently attend the Blank Page and SCV Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror Writing groups.

Additional Help?
I recently hired Elaine Ash, a development editor, to help me finalize my own collection of short stories for release.

What Are My Interests?
In addition to enjoying reading science fiction and fantasy short stories and novels, I'm interested in current events and many styles of humor.

What Am I Working On?
I'm currently working on humorous high fantasy, low fantasy and no fantasy (science fiction) novels. Also in the works are short stories of varying lengths.

Biography

As a published finalist in the L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 29, XXIX I was asked to write a 200 word bio. Here it is, for free. To read my story, you will need to buy the book.

Chrome Oxide was created as an internet persona to reflect his collection of music related books, vinyl, CDs, DVDs and cassettes.

He started life with a normal name roaming the wilds of Los Angeles. It didn't take long before he developed his twin passions of listening to music and reading science fiction and fantasy.

His formal schooling ended with an accounting degree from California State University Northridge. He then attempted to exploit his twin passions by becoming an accountant. Twenty years passed before he realized that seventy hour work weeks didn't leave him much time for music or reading. At that point he switched careers to computer consulting.

Now with more free time he accidentally became a recording engineer. His recordings are now available on CDs, DVDs and the internet.

Recently, because of inadequate discouragement, he started writing science fiction and fantasy. For the last two and a half years he has been torturing his writers group by learning two bad habits for every one he fixes. They thought he was ready to start submitting stories. He didn't. You can now judge for yourself. This is his first fiction story published for a wide audience. It won't be the last.

Sometimes people ask me why most of my stories have a specific attitude. I'm not sure, but I think it may have something to do with the paper clips I use to hold the stories while I'm working on them. :-)

Where Do I Write?

Writers are always talking about being able to sit and write where they won't be interrupted. This is one of the many places in Southern California where I can be found working on stories. Nobody ever tries to talk with me when the band is playing and I'm sitting next to the amp. :-)

As an added bonus, while I'm writing, I'm also audio recording that band. While it isn't clear from the picture, I'm sitting behind one of my two microphone stands (the other stand is at the other end of the stage) topped with an Audio Technica AT-801 Omnidirectional Electret Condensor Microphone with wires running down to my Fostex FR-2 Field Recorder sitting in it's blue case.

By the end of the evening when I pack up my gear, I have a CD quality stereo recording of whatever bands I'm recording and at least a few hundred more words on whatever story I happen to be working on.

But wait, there's more
