Purple Orchid, El Segundo, CA

Another night, another show.

This show took place at the Purple Orchid Tiki Bar. As the name implies, the club interior is decorated with tikis, bamboo, ... This is a very nice club to hang out in and listen to music. The owners of the club like surf music, and bring in surf bands on a regular basis. I have also seen the owners of the club at other surf music shows. While this is a small local club, there is usually a reasonable sized audience for the music.

I do have a slight problem recording at this club. The stage is small, so I am unable to put my microphones on it. Therefore I place my microphones in front of and slightly to the side of the stage. The stage is near the front door, so there is a lot of traffic. This means that I need to be concerned with people bumping into my microphones. In addition, there is free space in front of the stage where people like to dance. Again, I need to watch for people accidentally bumping into my microphones. Even so, most of the time I am able to get good recordings.

http://www.meshuggabeachparty.com/ Meshugga Beach Party lineup for tonight, 2 guitars, 1 keyboard, 1 bass, 1 drum and no vocals. Meshugga Beach Party performs traditional jewish folk songs as instrumental surf music. They also do a number of original instrumental surf tunes. They dress up like the stereotypical rabbi, complete with yarmulke, tallit and full beards. While they don't sing, they do occasional read from the dead jokes scroll. I have audio recorded this band before, and both guitarists did remember me, so there was no problem with me recording them again.

http://www.laikaandthecosmonauts.com/ Laika and the Cosmonauts lineup for tonight was 1 guitar/keyboard (switched back and forth), 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 drum and no vocals. Laika and the Cosmonauts is from Finland, and they have been playing surf instrumental music. Unfortunately, after twenty years, they have decided to move on to other projects, so this was part of their fairwell tour. They played an intense set of mostly original tunes (with some interesting covers) to a very receptive crowd. They ended up playing for a hour and a half, which includes coming back for three encores. Since I am not familiar with the band, I asked the drummer before the show if I could audio record them. They didn't mind, so I did record them.
