THE BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD DIARIES

BY NICK WARBURTON

Formed in April 1966, The Buffalo Springfield was one of the seminal bands of the 1960s. Only together for two years, the group recorded three landmark albums and enjoyed a top 10 US hit with “For What It’s Worth”, before splitting on 5 May 1968.

The group’s original line up comprised singer/songwriter and guitarists, Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay, bass player Bruce Palmer and drummer/singer Dewey Martin.

Prior to the band’s formation, Stills and Furay had worked together in New York folk-rock ensemble, The Au Go Go Singers during 1964-1965, while Young and Palmer had met in Toronto R&B outfit, The Mynah Birds in January 1966, before travelling to Los Angeles in March and meeting Stills and Furay to form the core of the group. Martin had the longest pedigree and was playing with bluegrass outfit, The Dillards before completing the line up.

Over the next two years (during early-mid 1967 and early-mid 1968), numerous bass players replaced Bruce Palmer, who was deported to Canada twice for drug possession. These included Ken Koblun, formerly of Neil Young’s group The Squires and Toronto folk-rock band, 3’s a Crowd, ex-Mastin & Brewer, Tim Buckley and Mothers of Invention member Jim Fielder and the group’s engineer Jim Messina. Former Daily Flash guitarist Doug Hastings also replaced Neil Young for three months in mid-1967.

The purpose of these day-by-day diaries, which cover the years 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970, is to cover all of the live dates by Buffalo Springfield and the various groups featuring the original members and their respective replacements. These include all of the pre-Buffalo Springfield groups listed above plus all of the post-Buffalo Springfield off-shoots like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Poco, New Buffalo Springfield, Blood, Sweat & Tears and Rhinoceros.

This is by no means a complete set of live concert dates but gives the reader an idea of the various comings and goings during this fascinating time. I have attempted to enclose a detailed list of sources at the end and acknowledgements.

I am sure there are mistakes in these diaries and therefore I would love to hear from anyone that can provide any additions, clarifications and corrections. My website is: www.nickwarburton.com
